17 Whippets named to all-district football team
Five Shelby Whippets were named to the Northwest District IV football first team.
In total, 17 Whippets were named to the all-district team that was announced Wednesday.
Brayden DeVito, Brady Bowman, Xadrian Ream, Karsen Homan and Denny Lafon were Whippet all-district first teamers.
DeVito, along with Ontario’s Bodpegn Miller and Perkins’ Issac Bunts were Division IV offensive players of the year.
Devito, the Whippets’ all-time leading passer, threw for 3,625 yards and 33 touchdowns. The all-Ohioan rushed for 1,560 yards on 188 carries and 26 TDs. DeVito also caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Devito was also solid on the defensive side of the ball, having 40 tackles, three interceptions, including a pick six. On the season, the junior had an astronomical 61 total touchdowns.
Karsen Homan was selected as a first team defensive end and co-lineman of the year. The 6-4 195 lb. senior led the Whippets with 21 tackles for loss and 8 sacks to go along with 74 tackles. Howman also caught a touchdown pass.
Ream, a 6-1 305 lb. senior offensive lineman was also named to first team. Ream spearheaded an offensive line that led the Whippet’s offensive attack to over 6,300 total yards.
Sophomore, wide out, Brady Bowman earned first team honors. Bowman set a Whippet sophomore record, amassing 1,477 receiving yards, 78 receptions and 12 receiving TDs. Bowman also rushed for 179 yards and two TDs.
Senior linebacker, Denny Lafon was a first team defensive selection. Lafon led the Hungry Hounds’ defense with 126 tackles. Lafon also had 12 TFLs a forced fumble and an interception. Lafon also scored a rushing touchdown.
Second team all district selections for the Whippets were senior wide receiver, Nic Eyster and Quinton Albert. Eyster grabbed 52 receptions, totaling 823 yards and 8 touchdowns. Albert, a 6-2, 250 lb. offensive lineman was a vital part of the Whippets’ offensive line.
Defensive lineman, Brayden Schartiger and linebacker, Sam Gwirtz were second team selections, both Schartiger and Gwirtz are juniors.
Schartiger had 52 tackles, 19 TFLs, 3 sacks and a fumble recovery.
Gwirtz totaled 118 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 6 sacks and a forced fumble.
