Shelby wrestlers compete at Galion
Shelby wrestling competed in the rugged Kooper McCabe Memorial Tournament, Saturday in Galion.
The Whippets ninth (101 points). Olentangy Orange won the tournament with 236 points, Galion was second (208) and Hubbard (188.5) placed third. Fourteen teams competed in the tournament.
Six Whippet wrestlers placed in the tournament, led by Denny Lafon’s runner up finish.
Christian Santiz and Max Miller were third place finishers. Lucas Mohn was a fourth place finisher, Corbyn Barth placed fifth and Sean Nolen finished sixth.
Lafon, wrestling in 150 lb. class, finished 4-1 on the day, winning by pin, technical fall, an 8-4 decision, a 13-11 decision in the semifinals before dropping a technical fall decision to Thacker (Lakota) in the finals.
Miller, a freshman, wrestled in the 157 lbs. class. Miller won his first three matches by pin. Miller list bud semifinal match by technical fall before rebounding to 7-3 victory over Hays (Olentangy) in the third place match.
Santiz competed in 190 lbs. class. Santiz won his first match, received a bye, won in the third round, was defeat 10-2 in the semifinals and bounced back for a pin in the third place match over Logan (Hubbard).
Mohn competed in 113 lbs. weight class, going 2-4 on the day. Mohn’s two wins were a 7-0 victory and win by default.
Barth wrestled in the 106 lbs. class. Barth was 1-4 on the day, winning the match by pin.
Shelby wrestlers winning matches: Arthur Cain 2-2 (138 lbs), Mason Koch 1-1 (144 lbs), Austin Winters 2-2 (285lbs).
The wrestlers travel to Ontario, Wednesday at 6:00.
